§ 26-189. Light in habitable spaces.

  • (a)

    Every habitable space shall have at least one window facing directly to the outdoors or to a courtyard. The minimum total glazed area for every habitable space shall be eight percent of the floor area of such room. Wherever walls or portions of a structure face a window of any room and obstructions are located less than three feet from the window and extend to a level above the ceiling of the room, the window shall not be deemed to face directly to the outdoors nor to a courtyard and shall not be included in the calculation of aggregate glazed area.

    (b)

    Natural light for rooms or spaces without exterior glazing areas may be provided through an adjoining room if the unobstructed opening to the adjoining room is eight percent of the floor area of the interior room or space, but at a minimum of 25 square feet. The exterior glazing area shall be based on the total floor area being served.
