§ 22-174. Illumination of structures.
(a)
A red obstruction lighting system shall be utilized on all communications towers and support structures that are between 165 and 200 feet in height, as follows:
(1)
At least one red flashing beacon should be installed at the top of the structure in such a manner as to ensure an unobstructed view of one or more lights by a pilot.
(2)
Two or more steady-burning white lights should be installed on diagonally or diametrically opposite positions at a height equal to one-half of the total structure height.
(3)
If a rod, antenna, or other appurtenance located on the tower, 40 feet or less in height, is incapable of supporting a red flashing beacon, then the beacon may be placed at the base of the appurtenance. If the mounting location does not allow unobstructed viewing of the beacon by a pilot, then additional beacons should be added.
(4)
If a rod, antenna, or other appurtenance is located on the tower, exceeding 40 feet in height, is incapable of supporting a red flashing beacon, a supporting mast with one or more beacons should be installed adjacent to the appurtenance. Adjacent installations shall not exceed the height of the appurtenance and shall be within 40 feet of the tip to allow the pilot an unobstructed view of at least one beacon.
(b)
All lighting systems on communications towers and support structures standing between 165 and 200 feet above ground level are subject to inspection and enforcement by the Department of Safety and Permits.
