§ 154-811. Abandoned vehicles—Sale or use.

  • (a)

    The department of police or the department of streets shall retain custody and possession of all unclaimed motor vehicles for a period of not less than three months from the date of possession obtained by the department, unless such motor vehicle(s) are sooner released by furnishing bond or legal process.

    (b)

    Vehicles the City chooses to use for City use must be retained a minimum of six months. An official request identifying the vehicle by VIN, make, and model, along with its intended use must be delivered to the Department of Public Works by the Superintendent of Police or the Chief Administrative Officer.

    (c)

    The department of public works shall comply with the provision of R.S. 476, The Louisiana Towing and Storage Act, and the Louisiana Department of Public Safety, Office of Motor Vehicles, Section IV Motor Vehicle Registration Requirements, number 20.01 relative to abandoned vehicles for sale or use by municipalities and parochial authorities.
