§ 106-262. French Quarter Festivals, Inc.'s, use of Jackson Square.
Jackson Square was once known as Public Square, with countless community celebrations held there. Even more credence was given to this location as a place of the public when in 1839 some 30-odd "stall-keepers-fruit merchants" were given permission to do business. The French Quarter Festival began in 1984 as a means of attracting locals back to the Vieux Carré after the extensive street and sidewalk repairs done in preparation for the World's Fair. This festival now attracts more than 760,000 people annually, and with the significant proof of the boost it has given to the economy by generating over $251,000,000.00 in economic impact, as well as being the stimulus for other events such as "Satchmo SummerFest" and "Christmas New Orleans Style," the French Quarter Festivals, Inc., shall be permitted to use Jackson Square for all of the activities planned for their annual festivals as provided herein.
